"We want to make a difference for every child."

The CANDL Foundation was established in 2000 by Carolyn and Lou Brown as an answer to the question, “What do you do when you have enough?” Their answer is, “You give it away.” And that is exactly what the CANDL Foundation does.

Thanks to the 28-year success of Available Plastics Inc. in Huntsville, Alabama, Lou and his wife, Carolyn, are able to put their money to work for children in a unique way. By starting the CANDL Foundation and using an innovative product made by their company, the influence of the Foundation began with a pilot program in Alabama and quickly spread across the country and even to countries abroad.

Since 2000, the Foundation has focused on the Phonics Phones program designed to provide a reading tool for every early childhood student. The Foundation has also sponsored other education programs such as Grandfather Reads and cooperative programs with Kiwanis Clubs, PhonicsQ and Challenger Centers for Space Science Education.

In addition to the education programs, the CANDL Light Award also serves to bring recognition to individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to service and to using their talents to create a positive influence.
